Casting Call - Justice League of America

Uma das coisas que eu mais gosto de fazer como artista é definir o visual de determinados personagens. Pra conseguir isso, eu costumo atribuir "atores" para cada um, especialmente quando desenho rostos. Eu não me preocupo com características físicas como altura, corpo ou talento dramático; o importante aqui é o rosto. Se o modelo escolhido parece com o personagem, BINGO!

Meu estilo não é realista e eu sou um péssimo artista fotográfico, mas mesmo assim essa técnica me ajuda a captar melhor a "personalidade visual" de cada personagem. E como para desenhar não há limites orçamentários, nem envelhecimento, eu posso buscar atores que já envelheceram (até falecidos!) e misturar com atores mais novos para criar o "cast" ideal.

One of the things I like most as an artist is to define the look of specific characters. In order to achieve that, I usually assign "actors" to each one, specially when drawing faces. I don´t worry about physical atributes such as height, build or acting talent; the important thing here is the face. If the chosen model looks the part, BINGO!

My style is not realistic and I´m a lousy photographic artist, but still this technique helps me capture the "visual personality" of each individual character. And since we don´t have monetary budgets or aging in art, I can search for actors who are aged beyond the part (even deceased ones!) and mix them with younger ones to create the ideal cast.

Superman/Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve):
Desculpe, mas nenhum ator até agora conseguiu ser mais parecido com o Superman do que o Chris Reeve (Superman, Em Algum Lugar do Passado). Só isso!

I´m sorry, but no actor have managed to look like Superman more than Chris Reeve (Superman, Somewhere in Time) as of yet. Nuff´ said!





Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Monica Belucci):
Por mais que eu adore o visual da Linda Carter, uma coisa sempre me incomodou na Mulher Maravilha... Ela é grega! Por isso, para mim, o visual da Princesa Diana tem que ser mais exótico, mais... mediterrâneo. Sem esquecer que a nossa heroína deve ser linda de morrer, ninguém melhor que Monica Belucci (Matrix Reloaded, Os Irmãos Grimm) para preencher os requisitos (com lentes azuis pra completar o visual).

As much as I love Linda Carter´s look, one thing always bugged me about Wonder Woman... She´s greek! Therefore, to me, Princess Diana should look a bit more exotic, a bit more... mediterranean. Keeping in mind that our heroine should have looks to die for, no one fits the bill better than Monica Belucci (Matrix Reloaded, The Brothers Grimm), with blue contacts to complete the package.

Batman/Bruce Wayne (David Boreanaz):
Okay, aqui precisamos de um cara que possa parecer um playboy bonitão durante o dia (até bancando o engraçado de vez em quando), mas que também possa arrebentar alguns bandidos à noite. Esse cara tem que funcionar tanto sorrindo, quanto sério como o diabo. Depois de muito pensar, apesar de bastante surpreso com o Christian Bale em ambos os filmes, pra mim o Batman se parece com o David Boreanaz (Angel, Bones)

Okay, here we need a guy who can look like a good-looking playboy by day (even a little funny sometimes) but also look like he can kick serious ass by night. This guy needs to work both smiling and serious as hell. After much consideration, while I was really surprised by Christian Bale in both movies, to me Batman looks like David Boreanaz (Angel, Bones).

The Flash/Barry Allen (Anthony Michael Hall):
Aqui eu estou escolhendo o Flash clássico, Barry Allen (espere pra ver minha escolha de Wally West no Casting Call dos Titãs, em breve). Barry tem ser alguém que possa parecer um cientista meio nerd de dia, mas que também fique bem maneiro numa roupa de Flash. Escolhi Anthony Michael Hall (Dark Knight, Dead Zone) justamente por tudo isso.

Here I´m going for the classic Flash, Barry Allen (check out my choice for Wally West in an upcoming Titans Casting Call). Barry must be someone who can look like a geeky scientist by day, but who can also look cool in a Flash suit. I went with Anthony Michael Hall (Dark Knight, Dead Zone) for those reasons.

Green Lantern/Hal Jordan (Dennis Quaid):
Hal é um cara que tem um certo charme canalha, meio sacana, mas também parece decidido e resoluto. Pra mim, ainda não há ator melhor para encarnar essas características do que o Dennis Quaid (O Dia Depois do Amanhã, G.I.Joe) quando mais novo.

Hal is a guy with a roguish look, kinda like a scoundrel, but who is also focused and resolute. To me, there´s no better actor for that than an young Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow, G.I.Joe Rise of the Cobra).

Aquaman/Arthur Curry (Paul Walker):
Essa foi uma escolha difícil. Aquaman já teve várias encarnações, então eu precisava de alguém que pudesse funcionar em qualquer versão. Depois de muito pensar, acabei ficando com Paul Walker (Velozes e Furiosos, Linha do Tempo). Acho que ele se encaixa bem tanto na "versão-comportada-de-camisa-laranja" quanto na "versão-velho-lobo-do-mar-com-gancho-na-mão".

That was a tough choice. Aquaman had many incarnations, so I needed someone who would work well as any version. After much consideration, I went with Paul Walker (The Fast and the Furios, Timeline). I think he fits well both in the "orange-shirt-neat-version" and the "hook-handed-old-sea-dog".

Green Arrow/Oliver Queen (Denis Leary):
Na minha opinião, o maior erro que as pessoas cometem ao escalar um "ator" para o Arqueiro Verde é procurar por alguém com um cavanhaque. Caramba, o cara pode deixar crescer um cavanhaque! (No caso, eu posso DESENHAR um). Então, eu procurei por alguém que parecesse charmoso, sarcástico e que pudesse gritar com o Superman, mesmo sem ter nenhum super poder. Essa pessoa É o Denis Leary (A Era do Gelo, Rescue Me)!

In my opinion, the most common mistake people make when casting Green Arrow is looking for a guy with a goatee. Heck, a guy can grow a goatee! (In this case, I can DRAW one). So I looked for someone who could be charming, sarcastic and who looks like he could yell at Superman even tough he has no super powers. That person IS Denis Leary (Ice Age, Rescue Me)!

Black Canary/Dinah Lance (Charlize Theron):
Ah, Canário Negro... Uma loira gostosa que fique bem de meia arrastão e ainda pareça que pode arrebentar (eu falei ARREBENTAR) alguns bandidos enquanto usa isso. Ah, e ela ainda tem que fazer par com o Arqueiro Verde! Alguém aí conhece uma opção mais perfeita que Charlize Theron (Monster, Aeon Flux)?

Oh, Black Canary... A hot blonde who looks great in stockings and must look like she can kick serious (I mean SERIOUS) ass while wearing that. Oh, and she has to pair with Green Arrow too! Can anyone think of a more perfect fit than Charlize Theron (Monster, Aeon Flux)?

Hawkman/Carter Hall (Thomas Jane):
O Gavião Negro precisa de alguém com cara de durão, pose de machão e que possa dar porrada bem. Thomas Jane (Justiceiro, Tudo Para Ficar Com Ela) nasceu pra esse papel.

Hawkman needs someone who looks rough, stands tough and can kick ass. Thomas Jane (The Punisher, The Sweetest Thing) was born for the part.



Hawkgirl/Shiera Hall (Lexi Doig):
A Mulher-Gavião tem que ser a parceira ideal para o Gavião Negro. Igualmente durona, mas belíssima, Lexi Doig (Andromeda, Stargate SG-1) foi a minha escolha para o "papel".

Hawkgirl must be a match to Hawkman. Equally tough, yet beautiful, Lexi Doig (Andromeda, Stargate SG-1) was my choice for that "role".




Zatanna/Zatanna Zatara (Jennifer Love Hewitt):
Uma coisa que sempre me incomodou é o fato de que toda morena nos quadrinhos é escalada como uma absolutamente bela modelo de olhos azuis e visual clássico. Não me entenda mal; a Zatanna que eles escolheram para Smallville é linda, mas o que eu tento fazer aqui é captar uma personalidade única para cada personagem. E para mim, Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer, O Terno de Dois Bilhões de Dólares) é perfeita para representar a Zatanna. Não me pergunte o porque, apenas funciona pra mim...

It always bugs me that every brunette in comicdom is cast as an absolute gorgeous classic-look, blue-eyed model. Don´t get me wrong; the Zatanna they cast for Smallville is beautiful, but what I try here is to capture some different personality between the characters. And to me, Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer, The Tuxedo) is perfect for Zatanna. Don´t ask me why. It just feels right to me...

Martian Manhunter/J´onn J´onzz (Chistopher Judge):
Hmmm... Precisamos de um cara fortão, que possa interpretar um alienígena perceptivo, ligeiramente inumano, e que possa arrebentar o Superman de porrada... Peraí, Christopher Judge (Stargate SG-1, Paradox) já interpretou esse papel!!! Ficamos com ele.

Mmm... We need a big guy, that can play a perceptive alien, slightly inhuman, and that looks like he can beat Superman down... Wait, Christopher Judge (Stargate SG-1, Paradox) has already played that role!!! We keep him.

The Atom/Ray Palmer (Misha Collins):
Eu levei um tempão pra achar um modelo para o Eléktron. Esse cara tem um visual tão comum que é difícil encontrar um look específico pra ele. Depois de muito considerar, eu encontrei Misha Collins (Supernatural). Eu não estou 100% certo da minha escolha, mas quanto mais eu penso, mais ela parece certa.

I took me forever to find a model for the Atom. This guy is so average that it´s hard to find some specific look for him. After a lot of consideration, I found Misha Collins (Supernatural). I´m still not 100% sure, but the more I think about it, the more it fits.
